Wilpattu National Park offers a more secluded and expansive safari experience, with vast stretches of forest, grassland and its distinctive natural villus, or rain-fed lakes. These open water areas attract wildlife and create beautiful settings for observing animals in their natural surroundings. The park is home to leopards, sloth bears, elephants, spotted deer, wild boar, crocodiles and many species of birds. Its quieter atmosphere and extensive wilderness make it particularly appealing to travellers who want to spend time exploring Sri Lanka’s natural landscapes. Wilpattu can be visited for much of the year, with the drier period from around February to October generally offering better conditions for wildlife viewing.
