Wasgamuwa National Park offers a less-visited alternative for travellers looking to explore Sri Lanka’s wildlife away from some of the island’s busier safari routes. Its forests, open grasslands and waterways provide an important habitat for elephants, sloth bears, deer, buffalo, crocodiles and numerous bird species. The park’s peaceful surroundings make the safari experience feel particularly connected to the wilderness, with opportunities to spend time observing animals rather than simply moving between sightings. The drier months, generally from June to September, can provide favourable conditions for wildlife viewing as animals become more visible around water sources.
