The Sigiriya and Dambulla area brings together two of Sri Lanka’s most remarkable heritage experiences. Rising dramatically above the surrounding forests, Sigiriya Rock Fortress was once the royal residence of King Kashyapa and is renowned for its ancient frescoes, landscaped gardens, water features, monumental rock entrance and spectacular views from the summit. Nearby, the Dambulla Cave Temple offers a very different experience. Set within a natural rock cave complex, the temple contains centuries-old Buddhist paintings, murals and numerous Buddha statues. Together, Sigiriya and Dambulla reveal the artistic, architectural and spiritual achievements of ancient Sri Lanka and form an essential part of the island’s Cultural Triangle.
