The Madu River wetlands near Balapitiya offer a peaceful journey through one of Sri Lanka’s most important coastal ecosystems. A boat safari through the river and its network of islands takes you through mangrove forests and waterways where you may encounter water monitors, birds, fish and other wildlife. The experience also provides an opportunity to see aspects of traditional riverside life, including small communities and local livelihoods connected to the waterways. Madu River can be explored throughout the year, with the generally drier months from November to April often offering more comfortable conditions for boat excursions along the south-western coast.
