Udawalawe is one of Sri Lanka’s most rewarding wildlife destinations, particularly known for its large population of wild elephants. The park’s open grasslands, forests and wetlands make it relatively easy to observe elephants, while water buffalo, crocodiles, deer, monkeys and numerous bird species can also be encountered during a safari. The surrounding landscape has a distinctly open and peaceful character, creating excellent opportunities for photography and wildlife observation. Udawalawe can be visited throughout the year, with the dry period from May to September often offering favourable conditions for wildlife viewing as animals gather around remaining water sources.
