Kalpitiya brings together long beaches, calm lagoons and open waters on Sri Lanka’s north-western coast. It is particularly famous for kitesurfing, with seasonal winds creating excellent conditions for both beginners and experienced riders, while the surrounding waters and lagoons offer opportunities for dolphin watching, kayaking and boat excursions. Beyond the water, the region has a quieter coastal character, with fishing communities, sandy landscapes and the nearby Wilpattu National Park offering opportunities to combine adventure with wildlife. The main kitesurfing season generally runs from May to October, while a second wind season from December to March can also offer suitable conditions; dolphin-watching opportunities are generally associated with the November to April period.
